The city-state of Coro is more like Athens than Sparta. One similarity is how the government is set up. In Athens, they had a direct democracy which gave citizens a say. In Coro there is also a direct democracy giving the people a say. In addition Athens and Coro both had a council. In Athens they had a group called the Council of 500 which was made up of citizens of 50 that were picked by lot. In Coro the council is made up of 51 elected representatives over the age of 30. Both of these councils voted on laws and essentially ran the government. Another similarity was that both Athens and Coro have an assembly made up of citizens in that city-state. Like Athens, women in Coro were not able to take part in government and were expected to care for and take a crucial part in the upbringing of their children. Women in both city-states were also taught household duties and were expected to care for the house and family living in it. Another way Athens and Coro were similar is that students would attend school for 11 years of their lives where they were taught similar material such as math. In both Athens and Coro non-Greeks are looked down on because they are thought of as inferior to Greek people. Lastly In both areas men received two years of military training following school previous to joining the army.
